To start out, you may want to keep it simple. Sketch paper works well but a graphite paper may hold the pencil better. Pencils have letter and number combination ratings that will help you determine how hard or soft they are. You are best off starting out with a soft pencil since they have lots of tones. Once you feel comfortable using a pencil, you may want to move on to charcoal.

Make a Rough Sketch

You probably won’t get everything perfect right away, so it’s important to keep in mind that what you put down may not be permanent. Therefore, it’s a good idea to use light strokes. You may want to add in details later. Also, although this is a rough sketch, try to make the object as true to life as possible keeping space and proportion in mind.

Once you have a rough sketch down, it’s time to start adding details. You may also want to take out some details you don’t want to include. Think about adding shading and dimensions. Think about how the sun might hit an object and what kind of shadows that would create. You might also want to make what you are drawing appear more lifelike by adding dimension.

Make Your Drawing Realistic

There are many ways to do this. Understanding perspective is key. For example, knowing to make closer objects larger and objects that are farther away smaller will make the picture seem truer to life. Knowing how to deal with proportions can also make pictures look more realistic. You must think of how one object relates to another in terms of size. Exaggerating proportions can be good for caricatures.

Color Your Drawing
